Searching the Internet (T)

There is an abundance of information on the Internet, much of which is valuable and accurate. Always remember, there is information on the web that is not credible. When working toward your final Portfolio, you will find the majority of Life Skills require you to know how to search the Internet to find information. Do you have a general search question that can be asked with a few keywords?: Google is always a safe bet for most search queries, and most of the time your search will be successful on the very first page of search results. Yahoo is also a great choice, and finds a lot of information that Google does not necessarily pick up. Do you need an answer quickly and don't want to search for it?: There are some search engines out there that are able to answer factual questions, among these are Answers.com, Factbites, and Askjeeves. (About.com). Keep in mind the following tips to aid in your scavenger hunt!

PREPARING YOUR SEARCH

STEP 1: STATE WHAT YOU WANT TO FIND

First, in one or two sentences, state what you want to find on the internet.

For example: I want to find information on popular methods of losing weight.

What are the characteristics to look for when purchasing a diamond?

When do the Monarch butterflies migrate?

STEP 2: IDENTIFY KEYWORDS

Next, underline the main concepts in the statement.

I want to find information on popular methods of losing weight.

What are the characteristics to look for when purchasing a diamond?

When do Monarch butterflies migrate?

STEP 3: SELECT SYNONYMS AND VARIANT WORD FORMS

List synonyms, alternate spellings, and variant word forms of each keyword.
