
THE EVOLUTION OF IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA
Section I.
Currently, the topic of immigration in our country is causing a flood of emotions, both pro- immigration and against. Never before in the history of our country has this topic provoked such an intense reaction. This Life Skill is to prepare you to make an informed opinion, rather than an emotional opinion, concerning immigration in America. To begin, answer the following questions using your research. Please include at the end of each paragraph answer, where you located the information including the name and address of the website.
1. In the years before the Civil War, from what countries did most of the immigrants to America come?
2. After about 1885 and up until the 1950’s, from what countries did most of the immigrants come?
3. Describe a typical 19th century immigrant's journey to America.
4. What kinds of work did these immigrants find in America?
5. From what three countries did immigrants come directly to the California Coast? Why did they come?
6. What were some of the handicaps immigrants had to overcome in America?
7. Why is the Statue of Liberty one of America's most treasured symbols?
8. What does the inscription say at the base of the statue?
9. Most new citizens, although they made a pledge of allegiance to the United States, still think of the country of their birth with warmth and affection. These newcomers make distinct contributions to their new home. Do you agree that America, instead of being called a "melting pot," should be likened to a "salad bowl"? What is the difference and why, or why not?
10. How does an Immigrant become an American citizen? Make a chart describing each step of the procedure.
Section 2. The Current Immigration Debate—Answer the following questions in paragraph responses.
1. Today, from what countries do most of our immigrants come to this country?
2. What areas of the country do they live?
3. What type of work do they find?
4. What percentage of our immigrants is here illegally?
5. How do illegal immigrants impact our country?
Section 3.The Arizona Debate
Research the Arizona Reform Act. In a well -written essay, explain what, specifically it is and how it impacts the immigrants of Arizona. Additionally, include what led Arizona to take these measures and why it is causing such a debate. Be sure to include both sides of the issue in your essay.
Section 4. Discuss with family, friends and students what the Arizona Reform Act is and the storm of controversy it has caused. Then record one person’s position for the Act, and one person’s position that is against the Act. Additionally, find the positions President Obama, Hilary Clinton and Jan Brewer, the Governor of Arizona, have regarding this issue. Finally, after you have research, written and surveyed on this topic, put your opinion down and your two supporting reasons.
